Florida Railroad Barons, Henry Plant & Henry Flagler both knew they needed to attract passengers to use their new rail service to Florida. Freight traffic alone was not sufficient. What did they do to attract passengers?

The office of an ophthalmologist in Bradenton, a golf course in Sarasota and “Big Orange” have in common? Dr. Pope’s office in Bradenton was originally the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Station and Depot. The Bobby Jones Golf Complex was the winter quarters of the Ringling Circus and was the home of the storage and maintenance facilities for the Ringling Brother Circus Train. “Big Orange” as it’s affectionately known is the Tropicana Juice Train - headquartered in Bradenton; it’s the largest privately owned railroad fleet in the world.

At RealRail, our Volunteers are an integral component to our success. We are a 100% Volunteer organization - our staff from top to bottom is a group of dedicated people helping to educate and inform the public about the historical significance and influence of this railroad legacy in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

We have many opportunities where you can become part of the RealRail family. From being a “Railroad Ticket Clerk” to a museum guide, we’re sure you’ll find that helping RealRail is not only rewarding but a whole lot of fun too!

Training and Orientation is provided for all Volunteers

Occupying a retail storefront, we recreate a 1950’s Living Room on Christmas Morning complete with a railroad themed Christmas Tree and of course, a train under the tree. This exhibit is staffed on Fridays from 5pm to 9pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 6pm in December (except Christmas Day and New Years Day).

Music On Main Street at Lakewood Ranch
On the first Friday of each month, downtown Lakewood Ranch becomes a family block party for the residents of Lakewood Ranch. There’s music, games, retail stores are open late and it’s a whole lot of fun. Each month a local charity is selected to host the beverage concession as a fund raiser. For January 8, 2010 RealRail has been selected to host the beverage concession. The hours are from 4pm to 10pm. Volunteers will serve beer and wine as well as We will also have “The Train Store” open one last time that evening.

RealRail Annual Model Train Expo
